Lunch Birds

redoneEvery day four women go to lunch at the same time. It’s always the same four women. They sit and talk about pretty much anything. Sometimes it’s about food, sometimes it’s about movies or whatever event happened today.

From afar you can hear them talking and laughing. Since they are women, their voices are higher pitched.

Chirp, chirp, chirp.

A laugh.

Chirp, chirp, chirp.

When my time comes to go to lunch, I sit at the table next to them. I don’t really pay attention to what they are saying, but rather HOW they are saying it. They gather around the table, pull out their lunches, and chirp in between pecking at their food.

Chirp, chirp, chirp.

Peck, peck, peck.

Chirp, chirp, chirp.

One bird flaps her wings with excitement as she chirps out her story. This, in turn, excites the other birds as well.

The chirping gets louder. It continues until whatever issue is resolved, or maybe the story is over.

They settle once more and continue with their regular chirps.

Eventually, the food is gone and the birds must leave. They gather up and prepare to take flight.

They fly away together finishing up their chirping. I can assume they are saying goodbye.

While it’s sad to see them go, the area becomes silent.

But I don’t worry. I know that at this time tomorrow, they will return for another chirping session.

Until then, I just gaze off into the empty blue sky.
